Beijing stole the show at the closing ceremony of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Sunday by presenting a high-tech handover performance at the gala finale to herald the start of Olympic Beijing time.

在25日举行的平昌冬奥会闭幕式上，“北京8分钟”惊艳亮相，在闭幕式临近尾声时为观众奉上高科技的交接演出，冬奥会正式进入北京时间。

The extinguishing of the Olympic flame in Pyeongchang, the Republic of Korea, marked the beginning of a new four-year cycle to the 2022 Beijing Winter Games after Beijing Mayor Chen Jining received the Olympic flag from his Pyeongchang counterpart Shim Jaeguk.

韩国平昌市市长Shim Jaeguk将奥运会会旗（经由国际奥委会主席巴赫）交给北京市市长陈吉宁，随后平昌冬奥会圣火熄灭，冬奥会正式进入为期四年的“北京周期”。

从2004年的雅典到2018年的平昌，两个“北京8分钟”相隔14年。14年间，北京发生了巨大变化，北京变得更加自信，发展步伐更加坚定，不变的是对国际社会的承诺、对世界的欢迎和北京的热情！

The show was directed by Zhang Yimou, a famous Chinese director who was also responsible for the eight-minute summer handover in Athens in 2004 as well as the opening and closing ceremonies in Beijing in 2008 that received considerable international acclaim.

这场演出由中国著名导演张艺谋执导，此前他还执导了2004年雅典奥运会闭幕式上的“北京8分钟”，以及2008年北京奥运会的开幕式和闭幕式，全球好评如潮。

Unlike Athens which focused on displaying Chinese history with traditional elements like red lantern and jasmine, “Beijing 8 Minutes” emphasized the Chinese people’s sincere welcome to the world using modern technology.

雅典奥运会闭幕式上的“北京8分钟”重在以大红灯笼和茉莉花等传统元素展现中国历史，而平昌冬奥会闭幕式上的“北京8分钟”着重于以现代科技展现中国人民对全世界的诚挚欢迎。

“北京8分钟”竟然用了这么多高科技

The show centred on the talents of a group of 24 roller-skating performers from Beijing Sport University, the number 24 representing the XXIV Olympic Winters Games to be held in Beijing. The performers skated together in perfect formation wearing specially-designed clothing covered from head-to-toe in LEDs. Led by two performers dressed as ‘Panda Captains,’ the remaining 22 were joined on the centre stage in an interactive, synchronized performance by 24 transparent,high-definition ‘ice screens’ mounted on ‘automated guided vehicles’ (AGVs).

The performance delved into China’s ancient past, tapping into the country’s rich cultural heritage while also paying tribute to the present, as well as the future thatlies ahead. In addition to references to traditional elements including the Great Wall and auspicious mythical animals like the Chinese long (Chinesedragon) and the Chinese phoenix, the performance also showcased China’s recent engineering and technological feats, such as its extensive high-speed rail network and its space program.

Towards the end of the performance, the Olympic rings appeared on the stage, as well as images of a global village, smiling children’s faces, olive branches and plum blossoms, symbolising China’s commitment to promoting global peace and building a better future for mankind. Finally, the skaters travelled a path to draw the ‘Winter Dream’ emblem of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

舞台上，22名中国轮滑运动员、2名由运动员扮演的“熊猫信使”以及24名智能机器人共同演绎冰球、冰壶、滑雪等冰雪运动项目。借助轮滑运动员滑出的轨迹和高科技实现的影像变化，中国结、中国龙、凤凰、高速铁路、大飞机、航天器等中国元素陆续展示，反映出中国的历史文化和时代风貌；北京冬奥会会徽“冬梦”、蔚蓝的地球、孩童的笑脸、橄榄枝和梅花编织的花环等纷纷呈现，体现了中国推动构建人类命运共同体的大国担当。

与人共舞的机器人

机器人与轮滑舞者互动，携手从平昌穿越到了2022年的北京。机器人灵活的舞蹈动作，让观众惊叹。

Performers danced with 24 intelligent robots – representing Beijing hosting the 24th Winter Olympics – as they showed scenes of sports such as skating and skiing.

表演者与24个智能机器人共舞（代表北京将举办第24届冬奥会），展现出滑冰和滑雪等体育运动的场景。

世界上最大最轻的熊猫木偶服装

Leading the team were two dancers in costumes of panda puppets that are the world’s largest but the lightest at the same time, each weighing only about 10 kilograms. To guarantee minimal pressure on the two dancers, researchers had tried hundreds of different materials until ending up with a combination of aluminum alloy tube and carbon fiber-reinforced polymer strip.

两位身穿熊猫木偶服装的表演者领舞，木偶服装全球最大但重量也最轻，每套服装仅重约10公斤。为保证表演者承重最轻，研究人员尝试了数百种不同材料，最后选用了铝合金管材和碳纤维增强聚合条的复合材料。

抗寒照明灯+智能发热服

During the whole performance the dancers and robots both wore LED lights on them that are capable of enduring the cold weather at PyeongChang Olympic Stadium without the risks of breaking. The uniforms were also made with graphene to keep the dancers warm.

在整个演出过程中，舞蹈演员和机器人身上都佩戴着LED照明灯，这些照明灯能承受平昌奥林匹克体育场的寒冷天气，不会出故障。演出服也采用石墨烯材料制成，以便为表演者保暖御寒。

如冰雪般的“冰屏”

舞台上，24块屏幕呈现出新时代中国的美好形象。这些近乎透明的屏幕有个好听的名字：“冰屏”。载着“冰屏”跳出华丽舞步的是24个动作灵活的移动机器人，它们不仅完成了自己动作编排，更与现场演员、地面投影进行了联动表演。为了体现冰雪主题，这些屏幕也使用了新技术，让它们看起来像是用冰雪制成的“冰屏”。

人工智能展威力

Images were projected to the icy floor while dancers skated across it, creating a sense of augmented reality. A number of moving monitors in the middle of the field were also controlled by artificial intelligence.

演出时，舞蹈演员滑行穿过投射在冰面上的图像，创造出增强现实的意境。体育场中央的几个移动大屏幕也是由人工智能控制的。

Zhang said he expects the show to help present his country's more diversified image in the new era.

张艺谋曾在演出前表示，“北京8分钟”将呈现出中国在新时代更加多样化的景象。

"We made every second count during the eight short minutes to showcase a confident China not only for its profound 5,000-year-old history, but also the remarkable achievements the country has made today," said Zhang.

他说：“我们充分利用了8分钟的每一秒，展现出一个自信的中国。这不仅是因为中国五千年的悠久历史，还是因为今天创造出的非凡成就。”
