Skipjack tuna prices for delivery to Bangkok, Thailand in March have dropped to $1,600 per-metric-ton.
This is down as much as $150/t on the level for February, when deals where done at between $1,720-$1,750/t.
one on the fishing side and another in processing in Thailand, confirmed this level.
previously reported prices were set to drop as the fishery in the Indian Ocean improved and demand from processors dropped, as prices were too high for canneries.
The decrease in prices was driven by weaker demand, as the finished goods market would not pay for fish at a high price level. "Everyone has cut way back in production as big losses on fish gap," one source said.
"The fish price in-the-can is too high for most markets and is finally being recognized as being a danger to future sales. What is certain is that even the biggest packer has joined in the chorus calling for a drop. This hasn’t been the case in the past months," another said.
